Shady Dip Minizine
Approach:
For this project I set out to make a mini magazine (a minizine) about skateboarding and skateboarding culture today. I wanted to create something reminiscent of early Thrasher and Skate Jawn.
Process:
During the making and photographing of the minizine I got to write about and design all of my favorite topics and interests while including pictures and designs that I see/think about in my day-to-day. The pictures of clouds on the first spread is my phone wallpaper, the picture of the guy skating the rail is from the intro to Skate 3. The picture of the guy falling on page two is my skate character placed in front of my favorite skate park from the game. A lot of photos in the magazine were directly pulled from the archives of my phone’s camera roll, the garbage can, the street background, the skate shop, all of these pictures I already had taken and was finally able to utilize. I also included an advertisement for Chengdu Taste and a Creative piece for the third spread. The hardest challenge I encountered in this project was the cov- er, originally I wanted a photo series of someone preforming a kickflip over the cover spread, but after not being able to get a clean video/picture I used an old image of myself skateboarding in a suit.
Results:
The result of the project is a personal love letter to all my favorite things. Skateboarding, Skate 3, the Yankees, advertisements. All the things I enjoy creating, thinking, and designing culminate into this project.
