Approach:

The goal of this project was to create a stylized design of the font Onyx. A popular font used online and one of my favorite stylized typefaces. Inspired by popular mob media like Scarface, The Sopranos, and Good Fellas. I wanted to create a typography booklet that looks straight out of the marketing for any one of these pieces of media.

Process:

After researching the font I set out to create a city-like urban feel with this booklet. Typically the setting in mob media is in urban areas and I wanted this project to be a reflection of that. Including elements from mob media, such as the suitcase, the explosion, and the dollar signs. Utilizing sharp edges and corners I wanted this project to feel flashy and eyecatching. The decision to use only shades of black, white, and red, was decided early on and really helped put a visual heirarchy on the subject of each page. I also wanted to ensure that the book ended on a flashy design that left the viewer feeling satisfied and making the book feel more cohesive.

Results:

The result of the design is a cohesive typeface booklet that not only encapsulates the stylized asthetic of popular mob media but the contrast of the red on an almost entirely greyscale background.
